Now Hiring: Astronauts

“If you have dreamed of joining the astronaut corps, now is the time to apply.”

Seems like all we hear these days about the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is its demise. But they’re alive and well, and actively looking for fresh anti-gravity recruits.

According to NASA’s Astronaut Selection website, the federal organization is currently seeking candidates for astronaut positions. They’re “continuing space exploration programs that will include missions beyond low-orbit earth” and “future deep space exploration activities.” You may be thinking Mars, but exploring nearby asteroids is more likely.

So what qualities are they looking for? If you’re a scientist, engineer, or “other talented professional,” then you might have the right stuff. If you value creativity, ambition, teamwork, a sense of daring, and a probing mind, then your odds of getting hired are better than average. You’ve also got to be willing to live and work in Houston and earn between $64,700 and $141,000 per year. And you have to be taller than 5’2″ and shorter than 6’4″. You can watch a promotional video that gives you more details.

Only 330 people have been selected to be astronauts in the U.S. program, which started hiring in 1959. (In comparison, there have been more than 1,000 starting quarterbacks in the NFL since 1960.)

Don’t wait too long to apply; the deadline is January 27, 2012.
